Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda star in the critically acclaimed movie based on the true events of a serial killer that killed 13 women from 1962 to 1964. This movie takes a documentary style approach in following the investigators as they piece together the clues behind a seemingly random series of murders. Fonda stars as police detective John S. Bottomly and Curtis co-stars as Albert DeSalvo, the man who eventually confessed to the crimes. Of particular interest on this DVD is the inclusion of the 21-minute Backstory documentary on the movie that originally appeared on the AMC cable channel, interviewed on camera are Tony Curtis (who gushes with his appreciation of the movie), the director Richard Fleischer and producer Richard Zanuck. Also featured is a three-minute Fox Movietone newsreel of the actual events that appears to be missing part of its audio track. Rounbding out the special features is a selection of eight trailers including a theatrical trailer and teaser for the main feature that are both in wodescreen with excellent picture and only a slightly distorted (from age) audio track. This is an excellent movie and DVD – recommended.

Tony Curtis gives the best performance of his life! The Boston Strangler is without a doubt the greatest camera work I have ever seen, split screen, widescreen, multi camera frames on one screen. Mr. Fleischer you made a real piece of artwork that will stand the test of time! The camera tell’s and reminds you how each seen is played out on a multi pictured screen! It is a puzzle that you have to put together in your mind , a lot of fun! Tony you played the greatest Psychological character I have ever seen on screen! I know because of my own experiences. Albert De Salvo the real Boston Strangler while in prison made 2 leather wallet’s, in which he gave them to Dir. Fleischer & com. Tony did not receive one! (I guess De Salvo did not like my performance Tony once said!) This is a rare one! A must see! Thank you Tony for one of the greatest performances!

King Boxer (aka Five Fingers of Death) came out in 1973 and is a classic example of a Shaw Brothers kung fu film – a genre they helped pioneer and perfect with this movie being one of the finest efforts from this time period. It also has the distinction of being the first kung fu film to be released in the United States, just ahead of Bruce Lee’s equally influential Enter the Dragon. In the 1980s, it inspired filmmaker John Carpenter to make Big Trouble in Little China and more recently was a huge influence on Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill movies.

The filmmakers maintain just the right level of pacing with very short lulls between action sequences. Let’s face it – we’re not watching King Boxer for its thoughtful characterization. That is not to say that this film is not well made or doesn’t take itself seriously because it does, but it is hardly Shakespeare either. Director Cheng Chang Ho employs sudden zoom in and outs and even the occasional freeze frame during many of the film’s dynamic fight scenes. This is a beautifully shot movie with expert use of the 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio with superb compositions of every frame. The use of shadows for dramatic effect in one scene, and a brief fight that takes place at sunset that looks like something right out of 1950s Technicolor era, is part of the reason why this film is so revered among kung fu film fans.

King Boxer features betrayal, torture, revenge and even some heroic style redemption thrown in for good measure – all heightened to melodramatic levels making for a very entertaining ride. Our hero has to deal with a devastating injury and his own self-doubts before he can face the bad guys and use the Iron Palm technique to save the day. You soon find yourself rooting for Chi-Hao to win the competition and the cute woman he loves as well. Even though our hero triumphs at the end, it is a terrible cost with friends, family and his mentor dead or horribly maimed all because of a petty rivalry between two martial arts schools.

There is an audio commentary by filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and film critics Elvis Mitchell and David Chute. Love or hate Tarantino, the guy knows his film history, displaying an impressive encyclopedic knowledge of kung fu cinema. For example, he not only talks about how it was the first kung fu film released in America but then rattles off 5-6 other films that came after. This is a very entertaining, information-packed track by three guys who are fans of the film and display a genuine love for the genre. Highly recommended.

“Interview with Chang-Hwa Jeong.” He talks about how he got involved with the film. Initially, he found the script to be “common” and studied Chinese history and literature in order to make improvements. He talks about some of the techniques he used to make the action sequences so exciting and visceral.

“Interview with action director Lau Kar Wing.” Kar Wing was the kung fu director on the movie and speaks about how he approached the many fight scenes, including the challenge of matching the actor with their stunt double seamlessly.

“Interview with film critic/scholars David Chute and Andy Klein.” Chute gives the film a historical context in terms of American cinema including its shocking level of violence at the time. They point out that the soundtrack was a pastiche of music ripped off of other film and that this would often hamper its distribution because of rights issues.

Also included are two trailers and alternate opening sequence that features very crude opening credits.

Finally, there is a “Stills Gallery” with poster and promotional photographs.

I was surprised to see some reviewers give this movie a lukewarm rating–not for the fighting as much as for the movie’s plot. I’ve seen maybe 12 martial arts fliks–fewer than many reviewers, so maybe I’m a bit green. But I thought the plot was FASCINATING, and the acting outstanding. Although the plot features very typical outcomes for the good and the bad guys, and predictable subplots (like the hero’s faithfulness to his first girl back home in the little village in spite of the very hot but proper second girl who tempts him),the magic is in the details–we can guess that A will lead to B, but HOW THIS MOVIE GETS FROM A TO B is VERY WELL CRAFTED. As for the acting, the hero truly manages to be subtle at the same time that he is passionate. He shows a nice mix of the old-fashioned vs. the flashy (though still understated) hero. I loved the clever switch from his playing the role of submissive reserved student who crawls out of the bar after being humiliated by the newly arrived fearsome bad guy one day, to his return the next day to the bar in an oustandingly heroic and funny payback scene. The women were stereotyped, but managed to play their roles with that sexy Asian girl grace, and with a sweetness that didn’t seem overdone. As for the fighting? Who am I to say, but my eyes feasted. There was always a nice balance between the fighters so that it wasn’t obvious till the very end who would win. And the transitions from one fighting scene to the next in the last half hour were done so well, and with such surprising plot twists and drama that I was on the edge of my seat!

I admit, I’m a child of the Silver Age of DC Comics! I grew up on Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, the Atom, Adam Uncommon…and especially the Justice League of America. So I admit, “Justice League – The Unique Frontier (Two-Disc Special Edition) ” brought a lump to my throat…it was like being a kid, again!

Based on Darwyn Cooke’s great, nostalgic reworking of the birth of the Silver Age heroes during the transitional 1950s, the absorbing film homages the characters I grew up, loving (especially test pilot/Green Lantern Hal Jordan, the Martian Manhunter, and police scientist/Flash Barry Allen), in the context of the era, a decade of Communist paranoia, McCarthy witch hunts, the birth of the Position Age, and struggle for racial equality. One element Cooke ‘lifted’ from Frank Miller’s “Gloomy Knight” account, that of the government ordering superheroes to ’stand down’, fits this saga exceptionally well, with Superman as the only ‘approved’ hero, Batman refusing to, thus becoming a wanted fugitive, and the ‘Golden Age’ heroes forced into retirement (I was disappointed not seeing more of the JSA, other than in the opening credits, but there are a LOT of characters that DO appear!)

Of course, a unusual, unstoppable, super-powered villain (the primeval, immortal ‘Centre’) picks this time to eradicate the human urge, lickety-split knocking Superman out of the battle, and requiring the modern generation of heroes, teamed with Batman and Wonder Woman, to put the world.

There are SO many touches I loved! A reworking of Hal Jordan’s origin as Green Lantern; the romances of Supes and Lois Lane, Jordan and Carol Ferris, and Barry Allen and Iris West; heroes I hadn’t seen in years (the Challengers of the Unknown and the Blackhawks), fighting along side Adam Outlandish, Green Arrow, Aquaman, and even a pre-Atom Ray Palmer; the superhero ‘Air Force’, with Wonder Woman’s invisible airplane, and the Bat-plane and Arrow-plane. Admittedly, many characters don’t come by grand veil time, but with a cast this gigantic, it is understandable (it would be a pickle of the ever-growing JLA of the comics, as well) .

I have to mention the converse talent interested, as the casting was dead-on! David (TV’s ‘Angel’) Boreanaz as Jordan, Neil Patrick Harris (’Doogie Howser’) as Allen, Kyle (’Twin Peaks’) MacLachlan as Superman; Lucy (’Xena’) Lawless, a PERFECT Wonder Woman, Kyra (’The Closer’) Sedgwick as Lois, Brooke Shields as Carol, Vicki Lewis as Iris…this is truly an all-star affair! Two suppose performers deserve special recognition; Miguel Ferrer is exceptional as the Martian Manhunter, combining an alien aloofness with compassion; and Jeremy Sisto has, arguably, the BEST hiss for Batman I’ve ever heard…he really IS the Shaded Knight!

While I admit Darwyn Cooke’s unusual chronicle far outshines the film (unique stories nearly always do), as someone who only sporadically looks at comics, these days, “Justice League” is a extraordinary ‘blast from the past’.

First of all, I will say this about this production…They cram a lot of DC droll history in less than 80 minutes of cartoon. The seek information from is “Is it worth it? ” I dont know

Second, I will say this has a mountainous name cast to believe the boots of these Characters. Kyle Maclachlan bring a different to Superman. Neil Patrick Harris (who did the MTV version of Spiderman) is the Flash. Lucy Lawless (Xena) proves she is a vocal amazon as Wonder Woman. David Borenaz (Buffy’s current vamp Angel) lifts the chracter of Hal Jordan to unusual heights. Miguel Ferrer and Kyra Sedgwick are wasted in the roles of the Martian Manhunter and Lois Lane. Law and Order Jeremy Sisco build a novel hurry on Batman.

They also have vocal stunt casting of colossal audio talent who have a throw away line or three. People like Joe Mantegna, Phillip Morris and Brooke Shields are allotment of this immense cast, but are wasted with a few throw away lines.

The legend is faithful to Darwyn Cooke’s two portion graphic new. He also does one of the two audio commentary tracks. It composed seems too rushed. Bruce Timm could have taken a bigger risk and done this as a three hour cartoon project, but I will select what I have

The production is a higher standard then most cartoons made for video, but when you push the envelope like Superman Doomsday (aka the Death of Superman), you need is push the time and the myth past 80 minutes.

There is a trailer, on this DVD, for the next made for DVD inspiring feature, Batman Gotham Knight…It looks pleasurable! Dont forget to witness this!

On the Whole, it is worth giving this consuming feature an airing

The Matrix is an genuine movie that combines science fiction, shoot-em-up action, and philosophical questions about the nature of Reality. If you are plugged in to a computer, and that computer presents you with a reality that is completely indistinguishable from your bear, is it any less precise?

This movie has exceptional special effects, comely cinematography, an wonderful soundtrack, well-crafted dialogue, and honorable acting. Keanu Reeves may be a lousy actor, but I mediate that the Matrix is probably his best performance to date.

The Platinum Little Edition isn’t really worth the extra money unless you’re an absolute, die-hard, consume the red pill, freak. I wish I had known that before ordering this product. It comes in a box about as thick as an encyclopedia, and is fairly substantial, so it won’t fit on the shelf with the rest of your DVDs. Opening it up, I was rather disappointed — most of the volume is filled with a cheap plastic tray that contains a celluloid clip of the film with a blown-up photo (decent, but nothing incredible), a few postcard-sized stills from the movie, and a copy of the normal DVD in a normal case. Nothing wonderful. For this money, I was expecting a DVD with DTS sound, alternate angles, deleted scenes, etc., but objective got the same weak Matrix disc. A major toddle.

Do yourself a favor. Assume the basic copy.

I bought Matrix a week age, but I have seen it 4 times already. Describe & sound quality are perfect! If you have a splendid sound system, turn it up and you will feel yourself in the Matrix too! The “Follow the White Rabbit” is respectable! As well as the introduction to the Bullet-time technique. There is no multi-angle opinion on the DVD, but the movie itself is elephantine of mult-angle views anyway. Unfortunately nobody can be told how proper the Matrix DVD is, you have to gawk it for yourself!

Wholly Moses! is a clever, 1980 Biblical farce that has much in common with Monty Python’s Life of Brian. Dudley Moore, between star-making performances in 10 and Arthur, plays Old Testament-era idol maker Herschel, whose life parallels that of the more famous Moses in many ways. Forced into the role of seer for Egypt’s pharaoh, Herschel becomes convinced he has divine powers, until destiny proves otherwise and his subsequnt misadventures as a slave, fake eunuch, and betrayed husband (Laraine Newman plays Herschel’s unfaithful spouse) lead him to qustion the necessity of believing in any god at all. Wholly Moses! is directed by Gary Weis, perhaps still best known for his short works on the early Saturday Night Live, and the film plays like a succession of sketchy ideas. Three doughboys–played by James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Jeffrey Lynn–meet in a foxhole in Europe just as World War I is ending. When they return to the States, they are forgotten men, and after Eddie (Cagney) tries in vain to get his old job back, his pal Danny (Frank McHugh) lets him drive his cab at night. A fare asks unwitting Eddie to deliver bootleg liquor, but Prohibition is in full swing and Eddie is arrested and thrown in the slammer. Gallant Eddie won’t rat out the woman to whom he delivered the hooch, speakeasy owner Panama Smith, (whiskey-voiced Gladys George). She bails him out and carries a torch for him for the rest of the movie, but he only has eyes for sweet little Jean (Priscilla Lane). Panama introduces Eddie to a life of crime, staking him in the bootleg business. Eddie’s grit and bluster suit him perfectly for this existence, and he’s soon a success, so he hires Army buddy Lloyd (Lynn) as consigliere, then teams up with George (Bogart), a liquor smuggler who plays a much dirtier game. Racketeering and murder are his methods, and he drags Eddie down with him. When Prohibition ends and the stock market crashes, Eddie loses everything and takes to the bottle himself.

The film is a bit schematic. The three stars are archetypes: Cagney the good boy gone bad, Bogart the bad boy who stays bad, and Lynn the good boy who stays good. Still, it packs quite an emotional wallop–Cagney shows extraordinary range, going from green boy to swaggering gangster to broken man, and Bogart has rarely seemed more purely evil than he does here. He kills for the sheer pleasure of it; it’s truly frightening to see. The final scene is a stunning shootout between Cagney and Bogart. With lesser actors this film could be pure hokum. With Cagney and Bogart, it attains catharsis. Laura Mirsky
